Federal Actions and Their Impact on Harm Reduction, Public Health Emergencies, and Climate Change: A Preview of the 2025 Public Health Law Conference

“Trump administration Executive Orders and dramatic cuts to the public health workforce, programs, and infrastructure, as well as policy changes regarding public health priorities have serious and far-reaching implications. This webinar previews two sessions from the upcoming 2025 Public Health Law Conference. Presenters will discuss the current legal landscape in three critical areas. In this webinar, the presenters will:

• Discuss strategies to support harm reduction providers and their communities, emphasizing coalition-building, creativity, and courage and how public health professionals can work collaboratively with harm reduction programs in a hostile legal and political environment to ensure best health practices, safety, and dignity for people who use drugs and their communities

• Provide an analysis of the response to two current public health threats: the measles outbreak and the H5N1 avian flu outbreak, and how recent funding cuts and policy changes have impacted the response to public health threats and emergencies.

• Discuss deregulation, legislation, and litigation related to federal actions affecting climate change with particular attention to federal shifts away from support of renewable energy, environmental justice, and conservation of natural resources, and how these shifts negatively affect public health.
