2023 Surveillance Status Report Public Webinar
“In 2021, an estimated 862,000 to 2.2 million people in the U.S. were living with Hepatitis B, and between 2017 and 2021, an estimated 4 million people were living with Hepatitis C—many undiagnosed. These numbers highlight the need for strong public health surveillance to eliminate viral hepatitis.
Recognizing this, the CDC expanded funding that year to support hepatitis C surveillance in 59 jurisdictions, up from just 14. This investment improved outbreak detection, trend monitoring, and resource allocation.
This July, HepVu and NASTAD will be releasing the 2023 Viral Hepatitis Surveillance Status Report. The Surveillance Status Report demonstrates how increased funding enhances public health responses, from identifying cases to addressing disparities. Over the past three years, funded jurisdictions have made measurable progress.
However, recent cuts to infectious disease programs, including HIV, STI, and COVID-19 efforts, threaten this progress. Without sustained investment, the surveillance systems critical to eliminating viral hepatitis are at risk. Continued funding is vital to protecting public health and achieving elimination goals.
Join us on July 31 at 2:00 PM ET and hear from HepVu Project Director Dr. Heather Bradley and NASTAD's Dr. Rita Isabel Lechuga, as well as Dr. Melissa Wardle, HepVu SSR Project Coordinator, on how to use this data in your work.”
